Q: Jason, can you tell us about your background and what led you to pursue franchise ownership?

Jason Fish: Absolutely. I spent a significant part of my career as a US Army officer, primarily in the infantry. The experiences and skills I gained in the military were invaluable, but after retiring, I decided to take a break and became a stay-at-home dad while my wife pursued her second college degree. Even during this time, I always felt a drive towards entrepreneurship.

Q: How did you transition from military life to the corporate world, and what made you realize it wasn’t the right fit?

Jason Fish: After leaving the Army, I tried my hand at the corporate world and landed a job with a local technology company. However, it quickly became clear that it wasn’t what I wanted. There were many layered reasons for that, but ultimately, I realized I needed something that aligned more with my entrepreneurial spirit. With my wife nearing the completion of her geology degree, I decided to leave my job and fully embrace my role as a stay-at-home dad, giving me time to reflect on my future.

Q: What drew you to the idea of starting a franchise?

Jason Fish: I’ve always had an inclination towards entrepreneurship. Even in the military, I enjoyed roles where I had the autonomy to manage my tasks while contributing to the bigger picture. The idea of starting a business was appealing, but it seemed daunting and fraught with financial uncertainties. That’s when I discovered Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching.

Q: How did you come across Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching, and what was your initial experience like?

Jason Fish: It all started with an email. In the fall, while contemplating my next steps, I received a monthly newsletter from Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching, inviting me to a workshop. Intrigued by the possibility of entrepreneurship, I decided to attend. Although I wasn’t ready to make a move immediately, the Vetrepreneur Franchise Workshop webinar (sign up for the next workshop at https://vetrepreneur.com/franchise-workshop/) planted a seed that kept growing through the winter months.

Q: What role did Chris Hale and Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching play in your journey?

Jason Fish: By February, I was ready to explore further. I attended another Vetrepreneur Franchise Workshop webinar, where I had a pivotal conversation with Chris Hale, Vetrepreneur® CEO & Senior Franchise Coach. Chris assured me there was no obligation to commit to a franchise after completing the program, which alleviated my fears. This flexibility allowed me to take the program seriously and explore my options without feeling trapped.

Q: Can you describe how Vetrepreneur’s structured process helped you?

Jason Fish: My military background made me appreciate structure and processes. Vetrepreneur’s ten-step process resonated with me immediately. Being process-oriented made the ten-step process make perfect sense. This methodical approach provided a clear roadmap, helping me understand the franchising landscape step by step.

Q: How did your franchise coach, George, assist you throughout this process?

Jason Fish: George was instrumental in guiding me through each stage of the journey. Our first virtual meeting was a thorough exploration of my goals and preferences. George spent about an hour understanding what I wanted to achieve. He returned a week later with a curated list of potential franchise options that aligned with my criteria. His guidance was invaluable in helping me narrow down my choices.

Q: What resources did Vetrepreneur® provide that were particularly helpful?

Jason Fish: The online portal was a treasure trove of information, offering everything from personality assessments to educational materials. The personality assessment was particularly eye-opening, confirming that franchising was the right path for me. Additionally, the portal offered continuous support, allowing me to research and prepare at my own pace.

Q: How did Vetrepreneur® help you navigate the legal and financial aspects of starting a franchise?

Jason Fish: Navigating these aspects can be daunting. Vetrepreneur’s program included support in these critical areas. George helped me find a CPA and a franchise lawyer, ensuring my business was set up correctly from the start. These professionals helped me get my LLC up and running and reviewed the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). It was worth its weight in gold for the peace of mind it provided.

Q: What was your experience like with ongoing communication and support from Vetrepreneur?

Jason Fish: The communication with Vetrepreneur® was consistent and supportive. I received weekly emails detailing the steps I was in and what to expect next. Whenever I had a question or faced a challenge, George was just an email or phone call away. His responsiveness, even on weekends, was remarkable. One memorable instance was when I faced a financial question that left me uncertain. A quick call to George on a Saturday morning provided the clarity I needed.

Q: How did you make your final decision on choosing a franchise, and what has your experience been like since?

Jason Fish: After thorough research and several discovery calls, I chose Schooley Mitchell. The decision was a culmination of Vetrepreneur’s structured process, George’s guidance, and my diligent research. Now almost two months into my franchise ownership, I’m seeing the fruits of my labor. The support from Schooley Mitchell ensures I never feel alone. If I don’t know something, I just ask, and I get answers.

Q: What advice do you have for fellow veterans considering entrepreneurship?

Jason Fish: Reflecting on my journey, I’m grateful for the comprehensive support from Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching.

My advice to fellow veterans is clear: take the leap of faith. Vetrepreneur® makes the unknown less scary. Attend a webinar, ask questions, and explore the possibilities. It’s one of the most analytical and educated decisions you can make.

Q: Any final thoughts on your journey from military life to franchise ownership?

Jason Fish: My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of finding the right support system. The structured guidance, personalized support, and a willingness to take risks can transform aspirations into reality. My transition from a military career to franchise ownership serves as an inspiration to veterans considering entrepreneurship. With the right support, anything is possible. The skills honed in the military can indeed pave the way for success in the business world.
